How do I spot a suspicious vehicle?
Everyone who rents equipment uses a vehicle to transport the rental equipment. That is why Veri-Rent allows you to store vehicle details and check the rental history of a vehicle.
Use this list as part of your risk assessment before approving a rental:
Vehicle Identification
- Temporary "paper" number plate instead of a permanent metal plate
Especially suspicious if poorly printed, taped on, or shows signs of tampering. - No license plate at all or plate looks fake or altered.
- Mismatch between plate and license disk (check that the number plate matches the disc in the windscreen).
- No license disk or expired/forged disk displayed.
- No visible VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) or a VIN that doesn’t match documents provided.
- Use Veri-Rent's license plate verification feature when you process the rental contract
Vehicle Appearance
- Unbranded or "too clean" panel van or bakkie (common in theft cases).
- Obscured or tinted windows, especially in the back/ cargo area.
- Out-of-province or foreign plates with no reasonable explanation.
- Signs of tampering (loose panels, missing badges, scratched-off VIN stickers).
- Heavy or odd modifications (like hidden compartments or unusual cargo mounts).
Driver Behavior and Documents
- Driver is unable to produce a valid driver’s license or ID.
- License looks suspicious (laminated paper, mismatched photo, no hologram).
See our tips on how to spot a fake Driver's License Card - Refuses to let you photocopy or photograph ID and license.
- Offers cash payment only, especially for high-value items.
- Seems overly rushed or nervous, avoids questions about use of the equipment.
- No proof of address or business registration, or provides vague references.
Pro Tips
- With Veri-Rent's contract management system you can always photograph the vehicle, number plate, and driver (with consent) before releasing the rental product(s).
- Veri-Rent also accommodates keeping a photo of the driver’s license and ID.
- Trust your gut: If something feels off, pause the transaction and verify.
